This project focuses on the journey that my roommate Izzy (Isabelle) has gone on to find her identity. It primarily highlights how she represents herself to others. As a masculine-presenting woman, much of her struggle with identity and presentation has stemmed from the media and “ideal” body types that are popularized. Growing up she understood that she presented as more masculine, making it difficult for her to present as feminine if she had wanted. Despite this, she has come to terms with how she looks and expresses herself to others and has found an appreciation for her androgynous body type and what message this sends to others. As my roommate and close friend, Izzy and her struggle with identity have also become part of my life. I wanted to show a vulnerable side of her that not many understand to highlight her strength and courage as she moves through a society that is plagued with many hardships for her and people in the LGBTQ+ community. She is an amazing person whose gender identity and expression are just one facet of what makes her the unique and interesting person she is.
